Town of York residents received a mailed brochure urging them to learn and adopt the practices of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), already the policy of the town and of the state of Maine. IPM seeks to eliminate misuse and decrease the overall use of pesticides in landscape care. Pesticides can endanger children and pets, as well as beneficial insects, birds, and other wildlife. Developed by the Conservation Commission and funded by a grant from the York River Stewardship Committee, the brochure addresses a mandate of the latest York Comprehensive Plan to consider regulations to control and reduce use of pesticides. Many Maine towns have passed ordinances restricting pesticide use, but citizens’ voluntary adoption of IPM can avoid the need for an ordinance in York.
